The second workshop held within ZelenGrad project, organised by “Contra Margum” Association of Citizens in cooperation with “Vuk Karadžić” Library in Kovin is titled “The Most Beautiful Colours of Autumn – My Herbarium”. Around twenty pupils and students from Kovin primary schools participated in this workshop at Čardak, Special nature reserve Deliblato Sands on Saturday, 11th October 2025.
On this lovely autumn day, all the chilldren could enjoy a walk through the forest and learn more about the significance of the Special nature reserve Deliblato Sands.
The kids eagerly participated in all the activities and showed extensive knowledge of the origin of the Special nature reserve Deliblato Sands, plant and animal species which inhabit it, protection from forest fires, the importance of recycling and keeping protected areas and environment in general clean from waste made by humans, and other topics. During the walk, they could see the footprints of different animals and guess to which animal those footprints in the sand belong.
Special attention was given to the extremely diverse plant world of the Special nature reserve Deliblato Sands and the importance of keeping the specimens of these plants in a herbarium. Maša Vuletić, a Serbian language and literature professor, brought her family herbarium which is more than 120 years old, where the first plant dates back to 1902, and the last one to the year 1914. Professor Vuletić’s father was entrusted with keeping this herbarium by a notable citizen of Kovin, Đurica Nikolić, whose cousin collected the plants.
At the very end of the workshop, the children were explained the data necessary to write down for each plant specimen, as well as how to press and dry them before placing them in a herbarium. Each of the workshop participants was given a sample sheet they can copy and thus begin creating their own herbarium by placing the plants they collected themselves during this workshop.
