If there is anything Banat is famous for, those are Saint Sava’s Day pretzels, which represent part of the rich intangible cultural heritage of our district. Motivated by our desire to keep the tradition and pass it on to younger generations, we came up with the idea on our housekeeping classes to prepare for the upcoming school Slava by making our own pretzels.
Due to the limited kitchen space, with the help of Dragana Anđelković Manić and Jovana Krivošić, our housekeeping teachers, we sought help outside school. Red Cross in Kovin took our initiative with a gret deal of openness and understanding by allowing us to use their facilities, as well as help of the employees and volunteers, which significantly contibuted to successful realisation of this activity. Our special thanks go to Sara Maksimović, a Red Cross volunteer who gave special contribution to this activity through her effort and dedication.
We received valuable support from “Contra Margum” Association of Citizens, which through its ZelenGrad project, actively promotes sustainability and care for the community by donating materials for making the pretzels.
During two engaging and educational hours spent on the Red Cross premises, the students first had an opportunity to get acquainted with the history of this charitable instituation and its values. Then they were addressed by Professor Maša Vuletić, who gave an appropriate lecture on the life and works of Saint Sava, his significance for the Serbian people, and all the humane values we keep teaching the children and young to this day, in the spirit of Saint Sava.
The central and the most joyful part of the encounter was preparing the dough and shaping the pretzels for Saint Sava’s Day together.
We are thankful to “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj” Primary School pupils as well as their guests from “Đura Jakšić” Primary School, where many of them came to the event, making it even more special. We give our special thanks to Professor Dejan Kreculj, who, even though he did not attend the event, was present in a special way, having previously sent a valuable article on the marking of Saint Sava’s Day from the beginning of 20th century.
